12 DAYS OF GIVING ~ GRATEFUL PATIENT SPOTLIGHT

Eli Harrod recognizes staff for excellent care at the Willett, Paris

………………………………..

No one wants to suffer any longer than necessary, which is why an efficient, professional diagnosis is important to help ease the suffering of someone with a painful injury.

When Eli Harrod, 38, arrived at the Willett Urgent Care Centre, his chief complaint was a painful shoulder. He had been playing hockey and was pushed into the boards, leaving him in pain for several hours before he decided he’d better have it examined by a physician.

The Urgent Care Centre at The Willett, Paris is staffed by a team of Registered Nurses and physicians who provide healthcare services from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends for people suffering from minor medical problems or injuries, or who require urgent medical attention when their family physician’s office is closed. Coughs, colds, minor lacerations, strains and sprains are common ailments treated at the Urgent Care Centre.

The Willett also provides on-site diagnostic facilities including X-ray, ultrasound, and laboratory testing, but is not equipped for major trauma, obstetric problems or other emergencies. Those types of cases are directed straight to the Brantford General Emergency Department.

Eli thought The Willett was the most appropriate place to go since his pain wasn’t an emergency, but he felt that it was urgent.

“I’ve heard some really good things about the Willett,” said Eli, who added that from start to finish, his experience there went extremely well.

He was first seen in triage to determine the severity of his injury. The triage nurse asked him to move his arm and shoulder in order to better understand where Eli’s pain was coming from and his range of motion. Then Dr. Elizabeth Thompson, who ordered X-ray imaging to have a closer look at the injured area, saw him.

Eli said he was told it was possible his shoulder had dislocated when he hit the boards but had returned to its natural position on its own.

Further imaging was ordered to allow medical staff to see more detail, so Dr. Thompson ordered an ultrasound, and Eli was later sent home and told he was to receive the results of those images from his family doctor.

What impressed Eli was the quick, yet thorough way he was treated at the Willett site.

“My first experience was great,” he said. “If I had reason to, I would go back, but hopefully there’s no more reason.”

He also noticed the cleanliness of the facility. While he waited his turn to see Dr. Thompson, Eli noticed a member of the Environmental Service team who was going out of her way to make sure the area was safe and clean for patients, families, visitors and staff.

Eli wanted to share his message as a grateful patient to draw attention to the professional level of care available at the Willett site.

“I thought it was important to recognize the doctors, nurses, and support staff that day,” he said. “I feel like they probably don’t get enough praise from the public.”
