Every day at Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS), lives are impacted with the help of Diagnostic Imaging. In the 2024/25 fiscal year alone, our Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department performed 295,110 procedures — an increase of over 5% from last year. These aren’t just numbers. They represent thousands of families receiving answers, reassurance, and care during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Diagnostic Imaging touches every corner of our hospital and supports nearly every patient’s journey at BCHS by giving physicians the clear, accurate information they need to provide the very best care.

“Every diagnosis begins with a clear picture. No matter what brings a patient to our hospital, chances are their journey involves some form of imaging. Each image gives us the information we need to guide decisions, provide answers, and ensure patients receive the best possible care.”

Dr. Khan, Chief and Medical Director, Department of Diagnostic Imaging

But the demand on DI services is growing — and so is the need for equipment that keeps pace with advancing technology. Updated medical equipment offers sharper image clarity, faster results, and more accurate diagnoses. For patients, that means earlier detection, effective treatment plans, and improved outcomes.

With donor dollars, we can upgrade needed tools such as:

Digital Mammography and Ultrasound – helping with breast health, cancer detection, and prenatal care.

Mammography uses a special type of X-ray to create detailed images of the breast, helping doctors find cancer early and follow patients after treatment. Newer options, like 3D mammography or contrast-enhanced imaging, give even clearer views. Ultrasound often works alongside mammography to examine lumps or changes more closely, guide biopsies, and check nearby lymph nodes.

Nuclear Medicine – showing how the body is working, not just what it looks like.

A special camera detects small traces of radioactive material in the body, allowing doctors to see how different systems are functioning. This helps diagnose and track disease, such as locating cancer and monitoring treatment, guiding breast cancer surgery by mapping lymph nodes, or assessing blood flow to the heart after a heart attack.

MRI – giving clearer pictures, faster.

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a medical imaging technique that utilizes powerful magnets, radio waves, and computers to create detailed images of organs, tissues, and bones within the body. It is a non-invasive procedure that does not require using radiation. It is very helpful in diagnosing conditions in various parts of the body, such as the brain, heart, joints, and soft tissues allowing incredible anatomical visualization. This is an invaluable tool for guiding patient care.

“I have practised Radiology and lived in the community of Brantford for over two decades. During this time, I have seen first-hand how radiology impacts the care we are able to provide at the hospital. Imaging in this day and age plays an essential role in providing clinicians with the necessary information about the disease processes affecting their patients. This in turn guides management and treatment decisions.

This is why your generosity matters, and is appreciated. Community support makes all the difference.  Every donation helps put the best technology into the hands of our team — and that translates directly to more timely diagnoses, improved cancer detection and monitoring, better patient care and ultimately better outcomes.”

At BCHS, our radiology team is highly trained and deeply committed. They rely on having the right tools at the right time to make the right diagnosis.

“During my years at BGH, I have the privilege of working with an exceptional team of radiologists, technologists and supportive administrators whose expertise and immense dedication to the community have allowed us to deliver state of the art imaging and accurate and efficient diagnoses”

“Unfortunately, expertise alone isn’t enough. Having access to the latest imaging technology is critical. For example, the acquisition our new advanced CT scanner allows us to fully support our stroke program as well as many others. MRI also often plays a complimentary and essential role. The equipment we rely on a daily basis helps us save lives and ensures the highest quality of care. It is only possible because of donor dollars. Funding allows for the procurement of cutting-edge technology. This ensures that our team can continue to provide accurate and timely diagnoses.”

To make these investments a reality, the BCHS Foundation must raise the full cost of patient equipment—funds not provided by the Ontario Ministry of Health. The Foundation relies on donor support to bridge this gap, ensuring we can purchase vital equipment, renovate patient care areas, and place the right tools in the hands of healthcare workers and caregivers in our community.

With almost 300,000 procedures annually, this technology is not just equipment — it’s a lifeline. And we need your help to keep this lifeline strong.

This September, we are thrilled to host our Ignite Gala: Havana Nights on September 19, 2025. Funds raised through the Gala, and our Fund a Need taking place that evening, will directly support the purchase of this critical Diagnostic Imaging equipment. But we cannot reach our goal without your help.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Join us at the Ignite Gala – celebrate with us, knowing your attendance helps transform care at BCHS
  • Give today – your donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward life-saving Diagnostic Imaging equipment

Every dollar truly counts. Every gift is a step closer to ensuring that when your family, friends, or neighbours need care, BCHS has the best technology to provide it.

Together, we can ensure that BCHS remains a place of exceptional health care. Let’s invest together to re-imagine healthcare.

“I hope you’ll consider giving — because every act of support helps bring the best care to BCHS. Your generosity truly changes lives. By supporting Diagnostic Imaging, you are helping ensure that every patient has access to the best technology which guides treatment decisions and improves patient outcomes. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your kindness, your support, and your commitment to ensuring excellent care close to home.”
