The Heart of Healthcare: Emergency Department

The Emergency Department (ED) at the Brantford General Hospital is one of the busiest in the province, serving 58,000 individuals annually from Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations of the Grand River, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and surrounding areas. Unit clerk Kerri Creeden is part of the team that is ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve patients who walk through the ED doors. “Being a unit clerk in the ED is a critical role to have” explains Kerri. “Unit clerks are an essential part of the team and a vital resource for nurses, physicians and other medical staff. We process admissions, discharges and transfers and make calls for our physicians to specialists, amongst many other tasks. It is a busy Emergency Department and we all do our very best to move the process along as fast as possible for patients needing care.”

Kerri continues, “The Emergency Department is important to our community because at times, it might be the only healthcare option available to someone. I am proud to be a part of the ED team because we are all working towards a common goal of great patient care and helping others. The ED staff always give their ‘all’ to patients. We care and take pride in our work.”

When asked about what the redevelopment of the Emergency Department will mean for our community, Kerri explains, “we know that wait times have been challenging for patients and the planned improvements and expansion of the ED will mean better patient flow, less wait times and reduced ‘hallway medicine’. Investment in the ED space and purchasing equipment is crucial to patient care.”

The ED redevelopment will add approximately 371 square metres of space and renovate the department’s existing 288. Enhancements to the ED will include new entrances, a new waiting area, extended stay zone, expanded ‘See & Treat’ area, and an Indigenous Healing Suite. Renovations will also improve and ensure patient safety and privacy.

The Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation would like to sincerely thank Kerri and the entire Emergency Department team who are there for our community when they need it most.
