featuring Heather Wilson, Past Chair – BCHS Foundation Board of Directors
Heather is a daughter, sister, wife, mom, a Montessori school director, an owner, a College professor and a community volunteer.
What motivated you to join the Board, and what excites you most about being a part of this organization?
In my initial meeting, I was horrified to learn what I didn’t know, and this was just the tip of the iceberg. I thought I was an engaged and involved community member. How did I not know how important the Foundation is, not just to the hospital, but to our greater community? Healthcare surpasses all issues! Without a healthy community and strong healthcare system to support that, there are no other issues.

What is your favourite snack?
That is a hard one. I would have to say I’m a dip and dunk kinda gal.
What are goals you hope to achieve during your time on the Board?
Education: educating our community, our healthcare teams, our staff. We can only grow and become stronger through educating ourselves and those around us. Involving our children and youth: Read4BCHS is one way I have supported in doing this. Partnering with our local school boards in promoting literacy and the critical importance of supporting healthcare in our community. I have loved seeing the engagement from our local pediatric team for this project as well. When we work together, we all win!
Supporting Staff: the Board’s role is one of governance and oversight, however, I feel very strongly that we must support out Foundation leadership and team in all that they do. This is a result of building strong and lasting relationships. Our Executive Director Kari, works hard to build relationships with our community and donors. As Board members, it is our job to support them and guide them to the best of our knowledge and expertise when needed.

What do you love about the community?
There is no place like home. Brant is truly a magical place surrounded by beautiful trails with a river running through. We have a growing cultural diversity , we have a rich sports community , we have an incredible arts community, and we have amazing people invested in seeing our community continue to offer some of the best opportunities in this part of the province.
Why is it important for the community to be involved in local healthcare?
Healthcare is the cornerstone of any and all communities! We don’t understand or value the significance of our healthcare system until we need it and by then, it’s sometimes too late. A strong and vibrant community relies on the health and wellness of all who live there. Together we need to advocate to ensure our voices are heard at the highest level of government. We are always so great at offering advice and criticism but when push comes to shove, I challenge us all, what are we willing to do to affect change?
